Genesis Part I: Where It All Began (Chapters 1–25)

GENESIS: WHERE IT ALL BEGAN (Chapters 1–25)

Genesis, the opening chapter of the Old Testament, has stories, poems, and genealogies organized by generations—all squeezed into a narrative of the creation story and of Israel’s ancient beginnings. We meet patriarchs and matriarchs who worship the one true God. We read of floods and of murder, of barrenness and of betrayal. All these dramatic accounts are woven into the fascinating stories Genesis recounts. The only book of the Bible that competes with its storytelling is the Acts of the Apostles!

Description

This talk delves into Genesis Chapters 1–25. It examines their content, dates their events, establishes their authorship, then dives deeply into the family story of Abraham and his heirs.

Although we are definitely interested in the historical and literary parts of Genesis, what we really want to take from this book—and learn from the Israelite family that dominates it—are the lessons it teaches us about our own walk with God. We discover how Israel addressed her challenges and how the historical, political, and religious background of the family of Abraham unlocks the themes of promise and faithfulness—attitudes so critical to our own lives.

There is an accompanying workbook with four-to-six study questions per chapter. It’s extremely useful, both for individual study and for group Bible study. If you’re participating in a group Bible study, you’ll need your own workbook. It is available in hard copy (Genesis Part I Bible Study Workbook) or as an instantly downloadable PDF (Genesis Part I Workbook PDF). The workbook also provides a way to collect and organize notes from research and group discussion.
