Hebrews: Bible Study Guide

$23.99

Description

The book of Hebrews is one of the more demanding in the New Testament. Written by a second-generation Christian whose identity is disputed, this document is often referred to as a letter but seems more like a sermon delivered as part of a worship service. It could even be regarded as an example of the earliest Christian preaching!

Given the anonymous author’s extensive use of the Hebrew Scriptures, this book seems more directed to Jewish readers than to Gentiles. It makes a powerful declaration of the majesty and uniqueness of Christ. It compares Christ Jesus to the grand characters in the Old Testament and finds him consistently superior to them. His achievements are seen through the lens of the priestly office that the Jews had long treasured. (In fact, it calls him a High Priest—a term unfamiliar to most Protestants today.)

Some feel this New Testament letter sounds a great deal like Platonic thought, presenting a kind of dualistic view of the world. Above all, though, Hebrews is aimed at helping new Gentile converts understand the life of Christ Jesus and stay the course of being a Christ-follower.

Each chapter has between four and six thoughtful questions that reveal key themes. The questions are designed to prompt readers to think of new ways they might view such familiar material.

Be sure to listen to the CD or MP3 version of the one-hour talk titled “Hebrews: Loving Christ’s Supremacy,” available in the audio products section of this website.

The workbook is designed to be used individually or by Bible study groups.
