Bible Talks – Cedars Camps
Oct 17-21, 2019 – “Genesis: Where it all Began” (Part I (Chapters 1 – 15)*
The Registration is now open. Contact Cedars directly. (This program is full at the camps but some hotel spaces are left in Lebanon, nearby.)
Our in-depth Biblical study for 2019 is the book of Genesis. Its Greek meaning, “origin, source,” conveys its unique place in the Biblical Canon. Here is the beginning story of God’s creation and the community called to bear witness to the Creator, Israel. Because Genesis is fifty chapters, the study will be divided into two parts: Part I, 2019, will cover chapters 1 – 25. Part II will address the remaining chapters of 26-50 in 2020. Handily, many commentaries divide Genesis into four parts, so this is a natural division.
In addition to examining content, authorship, the creation and flood stories, we’ll begin a deep look into Abraham and his heir, Isaac, one of the patriarchs of Israel Jesus referred to so often. Part I of our study will take us through the Isaac stories, and part II will pick up with the Jacob narrative to the end, concluding with Joseph. As always, the intent is to look not only at the historical, political and religious context of Genesis, but also to see how the themes of promise and faithfulness weave throughout the narratives into our lives today.
A workbook with study questions per chapter will be provided, as well as a PowerPoint to illustrate key points. Those interested in attending should contact CedarS soon as space fills up, and begin rereading Genesis, noting fresh insights. I look forward to this deep dive into the Scriptures with you. This is a tremendous opportunity to study a Biblical text in depth with fellow Christian Scientists, in a beautiful setting. We are thrilled to be at the Bible-loving Cedars camps for the third time this Fall and hope you can join us.
From a participant:
“When I first signed up for one of Madelon’s Adult Bible Seminars I expected to learn a little bit about the featured book, Daniel. What I didn’t anticipate was the depth and excitement of the learning, the comradery with the other participants, the total camp experience (what fun after all these years!) and did I mention the FOOD! Since that first session several years ago, we’ve taken a deep dive into Mark, Isaiah, Psalms, Paul’s letters and Revelation, and I can’t wait for Genesis! I wouldn’t miss it for anything!” Cindy Zwick, CS
-
Part II (Gen. 26-50) will be in October 2020, also at Cedars!

Bible Talks – Cedars Camps
Oct 11-14, 2018 – “Mark’s Gospel: The first (and daring) written account of Christ Jesus”
The Registration is now open. Contact Cedars directly. (This program fills up so do register early if interested.)
We will explore the rich history, geography, political, economic and religious settings in which the author wrote Mark. Also we’ll learn more about its two halves: the healing work in the beginning portion, including Jesus’ teaching; and the passion story in the last half. We’ll see what elements the author uses to move from the oral-only tradition up until the mid-60’s of the first century CE, to the first written account of Jesus’ life and teachings.
This is a tremendous opportunity to study a Biblical text in depth with fellow Christian Scientists, in a beautiful setting. We are thrilled to be at the Bible-loving Cedars camps in the Fall and hope you can join us!

Bible Talks – The Albert Baker Fund
July 28 (Saturday), 2018
Washington, D.C.
Topic: “Career Coaching from the World’s Best Handbook — The Bible”
If you could ask a few men (Joseph, Moses, David, Paul), and women (Deborah, Abigail, Mary Magdalene) what they planned to do with their lives, they might have given you a pretty different answer than their record conveys. Madelon ran one of Los Angeles’ largest career transition firms during the 1990’s when 500,000 aerospace and other jobs were lost. She knows a bit about people in transition and looking for career opportunities. But mainly she understands how individuals throughout the Scriptures have found direction and blessed others’ lives in astonishing ways.
This talk will be given at the new Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. and a tour of the new museum given immediately after for all who are interested.

Revelation: Unpacking Its Heavenly Symbols
Madelon Maupin, MTS
Founder of Bible Roads
Hour Five, 3:20–4:10 p.m., One-week course
Week One only
As one of only two apocalyptic texts in our Bible, Revelation has been a “head-scratcher” for centuries. We’ll explore its structure, authorship, historical setting, and especially some of its symbols taken from the Hebrew Scriptures. Revelation is the Bible’s strongest statement on spiritual warfare—one we want to understand in our own spiritual journey.

Bible Talks – Beaverton, OR
May 18-19, 2018
#1 – “The Universal Gospel of Luke”
The evangelist-historian who wrote both Luke’s Gospel and the author’s second volume, Acts of the Apostles, is the only Gentile writer of the entire Bible, yet these two books constitute over one-quarter of the New Testament. Considered the Bible’s best storyteller, Luke’s Gospel is filled with unique parables, dramatic healings, and a message of the universality of the Master Christian’s teachings. Join us as we explore its structure, message and overall importance to the larger Christian story. Luke is one of our ‘undersold’ Gospels and yet it is where some of the richest parables emerge with a message so relevant today: his focus on women and minorities.
# 2 – “Revelation: Unpacking Heavenly Symbols” —
We will launch into the New Testament’s final book, Revelation, which is filled with coded language and veiled allusions to kingdoms both of this world and beyond. In order to better unpack its intended purpose, we’ll examine authorship and when the book might have been written. By exploring the historical, political, social, religious and cultural practices, we begin to see the meaning of so many Old Testament allusions and prophesy that fill its chapters. Then we have an informed basis to pull the text forward to see how its patterns apply to Christians today – both collectively and individually.

Seminar 1 Daniel
We will examine the loved ‘hero’ stories of Daniel, but we’ll focus primarily on the latter half of the book, which steps into the unusual space of cosmic battles, combative angels and beasts. What does it all mean and what was the author trying to communicate? Most important, how can we apply these visions to our 21st century lives?
Seminars 2 & 3 Revelation
We will launch into the New Testament’s final book, Revelation, which is filled with coded language and veiled allusions to kingdoms both of this world and beyond. In order to better unpack its intended purpose, we’ll examine authorship and when the book might have been written. Then we have an informed basis to pull the text forward to see how its patterns apply to Christians today – both collectively and individually.
Why not make it a full weekend event?! We’d love to have you come early for dinner Friday night and stay after the workshops on Saturday for a BBQ and ice cream social. We’re also offering tours of Arden Wood and transportation to church Sunday morning. Overnight accommodations and seminar pricing packages are available. We hope to see you in mid-September!

Studying the New Testament’s final book, Revelation, might remind one of Dorothy’s famous line in The Wizard of Oz, “Toto, I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore!” A surface reading reveals strange imagery and veiled language, a style so distinct from the New Testament’s other books, and possibly why some have avoided its deeper exploration.
Yet this is why Revelation is so vital to study and why it will be the subject of our four-day Bible Study deep dive in October, 2017, at the beautiful Cedars Camps in Missouri.
We will look at the book’s historical context, why it was written, when and by whom and what the apocalyptic style of writing includes. By understanding the book’s structure, what specifically the Holy Spirit speaks to the seven churches, how they represent states of thought, what some of the symbols such as seals, trumpets and bowls, etc. might represent, we begin to dig below its surface to find its many spiritual gems.
While Revelation is filled with prophesy, it is a book written to the people of God to both resist and endure during tremendously challenging times. We have only to look at the persecutions of Christians in much of the world to realize its continuing relevance and how, regardless of where one lives, our faith can be deeply tested today. Revelation speaks to these very contemporary challenges and we’ll learn how to pull its lessons forward to our own lives and time.
The class will be limited in size and we encourage those interested to sign up soon. Participants will receive a workbook on arrival with study questions and a place to organize notes. A first assignment will be emailed to participants two weeks prior to the session.

“Matthew’s Gospel: The How-To Manual for Building Faith Communities Then and Now”
Rembrandt’s “Matthew and the Angel”
Have you ever wondered why Matthew’s Gospel leads the canon in telling the story of Christ Jesus, even though it wasn’t the first gospel written? Early Christians found its clear teachings and organized structure compelling as they learned what it meant to be Christian, how to pray, how to treat one another, who should be included in their growing church community, and so on. As a result, it became a treasured favorite. We’ll look at a number of texts, including the Matthew Code and scriptural texts leading up to it that lend fresh insight into its present application. In just five class sessions, you’ll gain a working understanding of this gospel’s uniqueness from the others, as well as new ways you can apply its loved teachings in your life.
